Skills-Based Approach to Integrate Spirituality into Psychotherapy

Overview

This virtual workshop is designed to provide mental health professionals with skills in addressing spirituality in psychotherapy.  Historically, therapists have shied away from the spiritual dimension of their work.  This workshop will challenge this pattern of avoidance by providing an evidence-based rationale for why spiritually integrated psychotherapy makes sense. We will provide a framework for understanding and evaluating spirituality and religiousness in the context of treatment. We will present a multi-level model of spiritual assessment that moves from initial questions to more intensive exploration. This workshop will underscore the importance of the therapist’s own religious and spiritual orientation.  We will then illustrate some of the ways practitioners can help clients access their spiritual resources, and how they can help clients experiencing spiritual struggles and problems. The workshop will conclude by focusing specifically on one spiritual resource – sacred moments – that therapists can cultivate for the benefit of both clients and themselves. We will draw on research, clinical vignettes, video clips, and discussion.
