As a family member or caregiver, we understand that your loved one’s mental health or substance use health can have a significant impact on you. The Royal’s family information events are intended for family members or caregivers of individuals with a mental health or substance use health issue. These events are an opportunity to learn from our experts, find out about available resources, and connect with others who share a similar experience. There is no cost to participate but registration is required. Please note, this session is for Ontario residents only.

This free virtual workshop led by Rob Nettleton and Amanda Rocca, social workers in the Youth Psychiatry program, will provide participants with an evidence-based understanding of anxiety and avoidance in teens, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) frameworks. Whether your teen is avoiding school, the dinner table, or stepping out of their comfort zone, this workshop will help participants to understand how avoidance reinforces anxiety and how to “coach” your teen to support them to build self-confidence, tolerate uncertainty more effectively, and strengthen communication between you and your teen.
In this presentation, participants will:
• Learn about how anxiety develops and the reinforcing effects of avoidance
• Develop skills necessary to identify avoidance patterns and “safety behaviours”
• Learn practical ways to address avoidance and caregiver accommodation
• Receive worksheets, resources, and handouts upon completion
