Geriatric Psychiatry Program/Behavioural support

Overview

Rachida Bouabdillah is a geriatric psychiatry outreach and behavioural support nurse with the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre.  In addition to working closely with the geriatric psychiatrist, Rachida supports residents, families and staff in Long Term Care, promoting non-pharmacological, person centred approaches.

By age 80, dementia affects one in three people.  In the coming years, many of us will be supporting a family member or friend with dementia. Ten to 25 per cent of seniors experience mental health disorders such as depression.

In this session we will discuss the signs and symptoms of dementia, resources and strategies, as well as the impact of mental health disorders on seniors.
