Overview

Trauma is an emotional response that results from exposure to an incident or series of events that are emotionally disturbing or life-threatening. Trauma can have lasting effects on someone’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, and/or spiritual well-being.

Sara Stewart is the manager of the Youth Psychiatry Program at The Royal. She is also a PhD candidate at Carleton University’s faculty of social work, studying complex trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACES). In this session, Sara will explore trauma, what it means for individuals and families while offering practical ways to help respond to difficult situations. This session is designed for caregivers to increase awareness and understanding of symptoms, and to provide tools to support their loved ones.
