The Royal’s Inspiration Awards celebrates the passion of people committed to making the world better, the determination to triumph through hardships, and the resolve to help break down the stigma often associated with mental illness. Over the past 17 years, the Royal Ottawa Foundation has recognized more than 90 individuals and groups who celebrate those who are breaking down barriers, being community builders, and increasing awareness of mental health.
This year, The Royal is proud to highlight:
- Azel Gallinger, Youth Leader for Mental Health;
- Ben Leikin, Community Leader for Mental Health;
- Chelsea Rose Meldrum, Personal Leader for Mental Health;
- Elizabeth Manley, Transformational leader for Mental Health;
- Glenda O’Hara, Personal Leader for Mental Health;
- Dr. Robyn McQuaid, Young Researcher for Mental Health.
These award recipients show strength in the face of adversity, give hope to those living with a mental illness, and help change the narrative around mental health, wellness, and stigma.
When Dr. McQuaid was informed she won her category, she responded, “I really feel honoured but its not just mine, it’s an award that I owe to many people who have helped me along the way, and there have been many.” Living with mental illness can sometimes feel isolating but there are people willing to support you along the way.
Last Friday, more than 600 people filled the Infinity Centre, where CTV’s Ben Mulroney and Megan Shaw hosted an informative, entertaining, and enlightening evening. This dynamic duo was joined by our auctioneer, Derick Fage to champion advocacy and show solidarity in the journey towards understanding the intricacies of the mental health sphere.
When asked about the ceremony, Mitchell Bellman, President of the Royal Ottawa Foundation stated that, “The Inspiration Awards recognize some incredible people in our community who are working to make life better for those living with mental illness. Every year, we come away inspired and proud of the support for The Royal and the cause of mental health.” This message of community expresses that no one has to be alone in their mental health journey.
This year’s 17th annual Inspiration Awards, presented by TD, raised a total of $500,000 in support of patient care, comfort, and much needed research at The Royal.
