Dear Supporter,
“The opposite of addiction isn’t sobriety, it’s connection.” – Johann Hari
With so many people in isolation, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing an increase in substance use during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic has been so difficult on all of us. We have learned that no one is immune to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the life-altering changes we’ve experienced in such a short time. As a result, individuals are reaching out more often and with increased urgency.
As the Royal’s first Vice President of Innovation and Transformation, my goal is to ensure improved access to mental health and addiction care for our community, through services and programs that meet their needs, in the way that works best for their lives.
I know that the holidays will look a lot different this year because of the pandemic. Many families won’t be able to gather for festive meals or share special traditions together, like they have in years past.
And many people will feel isolated, alone and hopeless.
But there is hope…and that hope is you. Community support will help our patients who are struggling now, more than ever, during the pandemic and the holiday season.
Your kindness will provide holiday cheer during what has been a difficult and lonely year for so many people. Addiction has no biases and it can affect each and every one of us.
I want to reassure you that just because someone is drinking more, doesn’t necessarily mean they have a problem…but increasing alcohol use and frequency can put someone towards the path where it can become a problem.

As someone who works directly with patients, I’ve seen the impact our donors have on the lives of so many people living with mental illness and/or addictions. I’m truly grateful to our community of friends and supporters for being there for our patients when they need help most.
But today, our patients need you more than ever before.
Please accept my best wishes to you and your loved ones for a healthy, joyous and peaceful holiday season!
Sincerely,
