On Monday, April 8, 2024, a solar eclipse will take place in eastern Canada between approx. 2-4:30 p.m. During this time, the moon will pass between the earth and the sun, casting a shadow over our region.
In Brockville, the eclipse is expected to cover 100% of the sun for 2-3 minutes around 3:24 p.m. In Ottawa, the eclipse is expected to cover up to 99% of the sun for 2-3 minutes around 3:25 p.m. Although this total/near-total coverage only lasts a few moments, it will be dangerous to look directly at the sun from approximately 2-4:30 p.m. It is only safe to look at the sun during a solar eclipse when wearing solar eclipse glasses.
While eclipses are fascinating to watch, it’s important to prioritize safety as looking directly at the sun during an eclipse without proper eye protection can cause permanent damage. With this in mind, The Royal has put together a safety plan to help everyone be aware of the risks and enjoy this phenomenon safely.
Please plan ahead and refer to resources from Ottawa Public Health and Leeds Grenville Public Health for further information about risks and safety considerations.
