Ottawa Blues for Youth is back

Once again, this year’s Ottawa Blues for Youth musical fundraiser promises to be an evening of great music for a great cause. And with less than 25 tickets remaining, it’s likely to be a sellout.

The event is taking place Saturday October 22 at Irene’s Pub and two blues bands will provide the evening’s entertainment: KJ and The Strayways, and LH Express. The evening will be emceed by Katherine Dines of Move 100 and will include a few surprise guests.

“It’s going to be a fabulous show,” says Anita Manley, who created Ottawa Blues for Youth in 2020 and is organizing it again this year. “It will be an amazing night out at Irene’s, a fantastic venue for a show like this.”

Manley, who is currently a member of The Royal’s board of trustees, has logged thousands of hours as a volunteer at The Royal and has been recognized for her advocacy and advisory roles as well as her willingness to share her story of recovery.

Youth mental health is a cause that is close to her heart.

Approximately 4,000 deaths by suicide occur in Canada every year – 11 every day – making it the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults between the ages of 15 and 34.

“The need for early intervention for young people is key,” says Manley. “Anything we can do to reduce that number is worth it.”

Funds raised from this year’s Ottawa Blues for Youth will support a suicide prevention program called the Youth-Nominated Support Team, which is designed to improve outcomes for young people who have recently reported a suicide attempt or have serious thoughts of suicide.

Last year’s Ottawa Blues for Youth raised over $21,000. This year, Manley hopes to break that record and raise $25,000 through ticket sales, event sponsorship, and an online auction that includes tickets to sporting events, memorabilia, artwork, floral arrangements, gift cards to local restaurants, and more.

“There is something for everyone,” says Manley. “It’s a great way to get your holiday shopping done early for a really great cause.”

Tickets to the live show are $40, but if you can’t make it in person, you can tune in to the broadcast online for a suggested donation of $25.
