OTTAWA, February 8, 2023 - The Royal’s Board of Trustees has appointed Pierre Noel as interim president and CEO of The Royal effective February 28, 2023. Noel will lead The Royal for the next eight to 12 months until the Board completes its search for a permanent president and CEO.
“Pierre’s knowledge and experience will be a great asset to The Royal over the coming months. He will work closely with leaders, staff, and physicians across the organization as well as client and family representatives to lay the groundwork that will help us achieve the goals set forth in our strategic plan,” said Sharon Squire, Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Royal. “Pierre will play an integral role in preparing the organization for our future, while keeping focus on The Royal’s top priority, which is always providing excellent client- and family-centred mental health care for our community.”
Noel has a wealth of experience as an executive leader in the health care sector spanning over 30 years. He recently retired after serving 16 years as president and CEO of Pembroke Regional Hospital while concurrently serving as president and CEO of the Mattawa Hospital and the Algonquin Nursing Home for the past five years. During his time at PRH, he led the hospital through a period of renewal and growth, including the creation of new, state-of-the art surgical facilities; the introduction of a Family Medicine Teaching Unit in partnership with uOttawa; and the successful achievement of accreditation with exemplary standing.
Prior to his work in Pembroke, Noel was involved in leadership roles in hospitals and health service organizations in Ottawa, Sudbury, Toronto, and in Wellington County. He also served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) from 2014 to 2016.
This will not be Noel’s first experience at The Royal; he served as the Director, Administrative Services at The Royal in 1989 and 1990.
“I am excited to have this opportunity to come back to The Royal after starting my career here nearly 30 years ago,” said Noel. “The Royal has always been dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of its community with excellent care. It will be a great honour to lead this incredible team as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of mental health care innovation. I am inspired by the work they do, the strategy they’ve undertaken, and their enduring commitment to client and family-centred care.”
Noel will take over for Cal Crocker, who has served as the acting president and CEO of The Royal since December 2022. Crocker will return his full focus to his role as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Office of The Royal, working in close collaboration with Noel and the rest of The Royal’s senior leadership team.
“On behalf of the Board, I would like to sincerely thank Cal Crocker for serving as our acting president and CEO over the past two months,” said Squire. “We are deeply appreciative of Cal’s leadership during this transition time, and we look forward to the valuable contributions he will continue to make as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer of The Royal.”
