Electroconvulsive therapy in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: comparison of the use of ketamine vs. other anesthetics during ECT

This study aims to compare the efficacy of adjunct ECT in patients with treatment resistant schizophrenia considering the use of ketamine versus other anesthetics.

Age range    

18 to 65 years

Gender    

Male and Female

Individuals are eligible if they

  • Are a current inpatient or outpatient of the Schizophrenia Recovery  Program;
  • Have a schizophrenia spectrum illness;
  • Received a referral to ECT by their treating psychiatrist as part of their treatment plan;
  • Are able to speak and understand English;
  • Are able to provide consent

Individuals are not eligible if they

  • Have a diagnosis of substance induced psychosis;
  • Have a diagnosis of another currently significant and unstable psychiatric condition (i.e. severe personality disorder, PTSD, severe active substance use etc)
