Dr. Anthony G. Phillips

Dr. Anthony Phillips, CM, PhD, FRSC, FCAHS, is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and a Senior Investigator with the University of British Columbia’s Djavad Mowafagian Centre for Brain Health and was the Founding Director of the UBC Institute of Mental Health. He served as the Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) from 2009-17, as well as President of The International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) from 2012-14.

His research interests are broadly based within the field of preclinical neuropsychopharmacology and systems neuroscience and he has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Pioneering research, with Dr. H.C. Fibiger, laid the foundation for the role of dopamine in the neural control of motivation and memory, with its clinical implications for understanding biological correlates of addiction. Dr. Phillips has a long-standing interest in applying knowledge concerning normal brain-behaviour function to understanding the neural bases of mental illness and addiction.

Dr. Phillips has been awarded the Order of Canada and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He has received numerous awards for his research including a Steacie Fellowship from NSERC; the CINP Arvid Carlsson Medal; the CCNP Heinz Lehmann Award; and the Bill and Marilyn Webber Lifetime Achievement Award from the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
