Clients (patients), families and staff members may be faced with tough decisions, and an ethicist can help in the decision-making process. We are here to help clients, family members, and staff work through difficult problems, as well as to provide guidance when tough decisions must be made.
What are some examples of ethical issues?
- Withdrawal of Treatment
- Decision-making for Incapable Clients
- Conflict of interest

What can the Ethics Consultation Service do for me?
The Royal’s Ethics Consultation Service is here to help clients, families and health care professionals work through difficult situations and reach common ground. We can identify and clarify problems, explore possible outcomes, and consider alternatives. While the Ethics Consultation Service may make suggestions or offer guidance, final decisions always remain in the hands of clients, families, and the healthcare team.
When would I use the Ethics Consultation Service?
If you find yourself feeling uneasy about a decision or there are different views to consider, reviewing an ethics framework or talking to an ethicist may help.
Tough choices can be especially upsetting when they relate to our health, or to the health of a friend or family member. If you are having trouble making a decision or if you are feeling uncomfortable with the decision you want or need to make, the Ethics Consultation Service can help guide you through this process.
Am I required to consult the Ethics Office when making a decision?
No. It is always up to you to decide whether you would like to speak to someone about an ethical decision. You are never required to consult with an ethicist, and always have the right to work through problems or issues on your own.
We all face ethical dilemmas from time-to-time, and it can be a comfort to discuss our concerns with someone, or to ask what research or policies are available for guidance.
Who can request an ethics consultation?
Anyone can request a consultation. Clients, family members, and any Royal employees can contact ethics@theroyal.ca for guidance or to request a formal consultation.
